Carlisle's MP John Stevenson is encouraging residents to make use of the Government's new "Eat Out to Help Out" scheme in order to help support local venues.

John Stevenson, Carlisle's Conservative MP paid a visit to two Carlisle businesses participating in the scheme, Whyte's Cafe Bar in Carlyle's Court and Penny Blue on Warwick Road.

He was accompanied by Jim Walker, the chairman of Cumbria Tourism, which has been promoting participation in the scheme across the county.

Throughout August, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday customers at participating venues can buy food and non-alcoholic drinks, up to the value of £10 for half price, subsidised by the Government.

The scheme has been introduced to help the food and drinks industry - particularly small, independent businesses - find their feet in the wake of the disruption caused by Covid-19.

Following his visit to the two participating venues, Mr Stevenson said: “This scheme is a great opportunity to get the economy up and running again following the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I hope that Carlisle businesses will see an increase in footfall over the next 4 weeks.

"The restaurants and cafes have socially distanced tables and the staff are keeping customers safe by using NHS test and trace and other newly implemented measures.

"Please do go out and support local restaurants and cafes, if you are able to do so.”
