A MAN suffered serious injuries after he was stabbed with a knife and hit with a pool cue in the early hours.

The 23-year-old victim and a friend were walking along Merton Bank Road, Merton Bank shortly before 4.20am on Saturday, July 11 when a red car pulled up alongside them.

Three men got out and attacked him.

One of the men armed with a knife is believed to have stabbed the victim in the stomach.

Another thug struck him with a pool cue.

Following the assault the three men then drove off in the car towards Haresfinch. 

Officers found the victim with stab wounds to his stomach and head. 

The victim was taken to hospital where he is being treated for his injuries, which are not life threatening.

A 19-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows has since been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding.

He will be questioned by detectives.

Throughout this morning officers could be seen carrying out forensic investigations on a field off Merton Bank Road, where a cordon was put up.

In a statement police said: “Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a red saloon car being driven erratically in the area shortly before or after the incident to contact them.

“They would also like to speak to anyone who may have CCTV/dashcam footage that may help with their inquiries.
