A FORMER department store which has been left empty for the past two years is being auctioned off for the equivalent of two family homes.
The former Marks & Spencer store on Stockton High Street is expected to go under the hammer with a guide price of £300,000.
The average home in Stockton went on the market for around £168,000 last year, according to Zoopla.
The department store has remained empty ever since Marks & Spencer pulled out of the town, after several decades of service, in 2018.
It had previously been a staple of Stockton High Street with three floors of clothing, food, homeware and a cafe, present in the town since the 1930s.
But going under the hammer, the former store is expected to be sold via a live-streamed auction next month.
Peter Mayo of Acuitus - who is holding the auction - said: “This a substantial property on the High Street and its sale opens up the potential for a new retail use or – subject to planning consent – its conversion to a new use.”
