A DANGEROUS driver who sped at 60mph down a back alley, a prisoner who threw poo at a guard and teenage robbers who targeted a chip shop armed with an axe were among the Warrington criminals brought to justice in May.

Every month, the Warrington Guardian takes a look back at some of the court cases that have been featured in the paper in the weeks previously.

Other defendants appearing in May included a lorry driver who was shopping on his mobile phone when he caused a fatal crash, a knifeman who threatened supermarket staff with a hammer and a drugs gang ringleader who branded himself 'the Big Boss Baby'.

CRIME: Possession of an offensive weapon, threatening behaviour and theft

Telfer waved a 10-inch kitchen knife and claw hammer at supermarket staff during the coronavirus lockdown.

WHAT THE JUDGE SAID: "Members of staff at these shops are under considerable pressure, and to receive threats and fear for their safety is very serious indeed."

SENTENCE: 20 months in prison

CRIME: Administering a noxious substance with intent

Hakim threw a bucket of urine and poo over a female prison guard in HMP Risley.

He had to be subdued with CS Spray by police when he started making threats with a knife.

The convicted armed robber sped at 60mph in an alleyway during a five-mile car chase with police before crashing into the gates of Rylands Recreation Club. 

WHAT THE JUDGE SAID: "It is pure good luck that nobody was injured – or worse – by your driving."

SENTENCE: 10 months in prison

The grandma pinched an elderly stroke victim's purse, having earlier smuggled drugs into HMP Risley.

CRIME: Causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving

The lorry driver was using his mobile phone to shop on Amazon when he ran a red light and caused a fatal crash which claimed the life of armed forces veteran Mark Byrne MBE.

WHAT THE JUDGE SAID: "This will be a burden on your conscience for the rest of your life, you were solely responsible for this tragedy."

SENTENCE: Four-and-a-half years in prison
