Wirral's beaches were largely left empty this afternoon, as the majority of residents followed government orders designed to halt the coronavirus pandemic.

Popular stretches of sand at New Brighton and West Kirby were all but deserted, with the message to stay at home heeded by the wider public.

Promenades were populated, but walkers all appeared to be exercising social distancing, with no evidence of large groups.

In plans to curb the spread of COVID-19, the government states that people are allowed to leave their homes to exercise once a day, but it is not made clear precisely where such exercise can take place, with some residents still keen to enjoy Wirral's beauty spots.

But although it is clear some people are travelling distances to undertake daily exercise activities in Wirral, social distancing appears to have been largely adopted.

So far there has been 9,849 confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK, with 477 deaths.
