The Prime Minister has ordered a partial lockdown of the United Kingdom this evening in further efforts to stem the coronavirus pandemic.
In a televised address to the country, Boris Johnson advised that all non-essential shops and businesses will now be closed.
Public gatherings of more than two people are now forbidden, except for family members who you live with.
He also ordered the British public not to leave their homes apart from for the following exceptions:
- Shopping for basics.
- One form of exercise a day.
- Essential medical supplies and helping other people in need.
- Travelling to and from work, but only when absolutely necessary.
He said that these are the only reasons that anybody should be leaving home.
The PM urged people to use food delivery services wherever possible.
He also advised that the police have powers to fine people who do not comply with the orders and disperse gatherings.
Libraries, outdoor gyms, playgrounds and places of worship have all been ordered to close. Parks remain open but gatherings are forbidden.
A ban has also been put in place on social gatherings such as weddings and baptisms, but funerals will still be allowed to go ahead.
Concluded his address, Mr Johnson said: "We will beat the coronavirus and we will beat it together.
"Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives."
