Most people can look forward to a birthday every year, but not if you are born on February 29!

People with leap year birthdays - known as leapers - can only officially celebrate their date of birth once every four years, forced to mark the occassion on either February 28 or March 1 instead.

The Globe caught up with a number of Wirral leapers and discovered that far from seeing it as a problem, they are very proud to have a birthday on a day that only occurs once every four years!

Wirral Globe: Helen Preston has only had 25 official birthdays but turns 100 todayHelen Preston has only had 25 official birthdays but turns 100 today

Perhaps the most significant leap year birthday today is that of Helen Preston, who turns 100 today.

Earlier in the week the Globe ran a story encouraging readers to send Helen cards to help mark the occassion, we can't wait to see how she gets on.

Helen resides at Grove House care home in Claughton who will be laying on a small party for her today.

Wirral Globe:

Laura Parker knows Grove House resident Helen all to well, as she works there and also has a birthday on February 29!

She said: "I love having a leap year birthday, a lot of people don’t like birthdays as they get older but because I only have one every four years I like to think I’m ageing slower."

Wirral Globe:

Tom Peacock from Higher Bebington turns 28 today (officially seven in leap years) and along with girlfriend Steph Elwood has managed to get himself tickets to go onboard HMS Prince of Wales this afternoon.

Tom said: “It’s always been novel telling people my leap year age, without telling them my date of birth, and watching them slowly try to figure out how that works!

"A leap year birthday just means an excuse for an extra pint, or six. Thankfully this year falls on a Saturday, excellent!”

Wirral Globe:

Born in 1980, Debbie Nicholls turns 40 today but only 10 in leap years.

Pictured above, Debbie says: "I was the first baby to be born in Clatterbridge hospital that year on that day and I made it into the newspaper with my beautiful mum."

Wirral Globe:

Rebekka Kelly might have only had seven official birthdays, but she's celebrating being 28 today.

After taking her son to football, Rebekka is spending the day with best friend Beth Lane at Titanic Spa before hitting the bright lights of Liverpool in the evening.

Wirral Globe:

Rylee Pinchen might be eight today, but it's only his second ever real birthday.

Sister Chelsie says that he normally celebrates on March 1 but will mark it on the proper day today by going to a popular play centre in Bromborough.

Wirral Globe:

Morgan Rice turns sweet 16 today, but is having only her fourth proper birthday.

The teenager from Wallasey isn't doing things by half however. She is marking the occassion by having two birthday parties in one day!

Happy birthday to all of a Wirral leapers out there today. We hope you all have a fantastic weekend.
