Proposals to amalgamate two Newtown schools to create a new all-through English-medium primary school received no objections, the county council’s Cabinet will be told next week.

Powys County Council plans to amalgamate Ladywell Green Infants School and Hafren CP School and last month the council published the statutory notice for the proposals.

Cabinet will consider the proposal on Tuesday, March 3 and will be asked to approve the proposal, which would see the new school open in 2021 on the existing sites.

The new school would cater for pupils from the ages of four to 11. The infant school has 94 pupils and there are 145 pupils in the junior school.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “The outcome of the consultation exercise we carried out last year suggested the preferred option is to amalgamate Ladywell Green Infants School and Hafren CP School and to establish a new primary school on the current sites of the two schools.

“We did not receive any objections to our proposal so my recommendation to Cabinet is that they approve the amalgamation of the two schools to create a new primary school."
