OVER the past few weeks in Yester Years, we have been recalling tales of the popular crisp factory on Church Street.
It produced Golden Wonder and Smiths crisps and has lots of fond memories with many of you.
Pat Ward nee Leah, grew up in Howley on Gilbert Street and passed the factory on the way to St Mary’s School every morning.
She remembers passing through the ‘heaven and hell’ entries close to the crisp factory and says the women who worked there used to give the children handfuls of crisps to go to school with.
It was located directly behind the funeral directors.
While the street the factory was on, behind he white building on the 1970s picture left, was known as Jackson’s Entry.
It was close to Jackson’s pawn shop, a fish shop and a bakers.
It was also near to Brown’s furniture shop, which was close to the Star Kinema also on Church Street.
