A MAN in his 20s is in hospital with non life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in Birkenhead earlier this evening.

Emergency services were called to Borough Road near its junction with Whitford Road at 5.30pm to reports that the man had been attacked.

He had staggered into a nearby shop to call for help and was taken to hospital for treatment of a non life-threatening stab wound.

Police remain in the area to carry out forensic, CCTV, house-to-house and witness enquiries.

Whitford Road was closed and a cordon put in place around shops on Borough Road.

A bladed article has been recovered nearby and forensically recovered.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said no arrests had been made as of yet and described the man's condition as serious but stable in hospital.

Detective Inspector Cat Walsh told the Globe: "We’re carrying out initial enquiries in the area to establish exactly what has gone on, and key to this is hearing from those who live in the area or were passing at the time.

"If you saw or heard anything, or have home CCTV or dashcam, please come forward and we’ll take positive action on all information received.

“On this occasion, the victim does not appear to have sustained life-threatening injuries, but this is always a matter of luck when bladed weapons are involved.

"We understand the concern that violence causes in our communities and have had significant results recently in arrests, seizures and warrants, targeting those who will store, carry and use dangerous weapons.

"Keep telling us what you know, and we will keep identifying those responsible and removing them from the streets.
