FIREWORK displays will be held in Widnes and Runcorn tonight.

Viewing locations for the council-run spectaculars are Victoria Promenade, Widnes, and Mersey Road, Runcorn.

There will be music from 6.30pm with the fireworks at 7.30pm.

The Brindley Theatre is Runcorn will also be having its annual Guy Fawkes night party, from 6pm to 8pm, when cast members from this year's pantomime Snow White will mingle with visitors.

Children are being encouraged to turn up dressed as their favourite superhero.

Halton Trading Standards is urging residents to ensure they only buy fireworks from licensed retailers or, better still, go to the council-organised display, which this year takes on a superhero theme.

Halton Council's message is 'Be a superhero and stay 'firework safe''.

A council spokesperson said: "If you do decide to buy your own fireworks, you should only ever buy them from a licensed seller.

"Do not buy fireworks from someone in the pub, from a white van, or from a market stall.

"All fireworks must carry a CE mark – a manufacturer's declaration that the goods conform to European safety standards.

"The instructions for use should be English, foreign fireworks without English instructions are banned in the UK."
