A man has been arrested after allegedly using a hammer to smash his way into a jewellery shop on Bromley High Street this morning.

Police were called to the burglary at the historic Chisholm Hunter at 9.30am before arresting a man a short distance away.

A police spokesman told News Shopper: "It was reported a man had used a hammer to smash the window of a jewellers and had then stolen a number of items of jewellery.

"Officers attended and a man was arrested a short distance away on suspicion of burglary, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon. He has been taken into custody."

A worker at Chisholm Hunter told News Shopper to call back on Monday when they could comment more on the situation.

The diamond merchants and jewellers first opened a shop in Glasgow in 1857 and now has shops throughout the UK.

One source told us a "number of watches" were snatched earlier.

Police said they are continuing their enquiries.
