Six members of a Wigton Scouts group have taken on their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

The members of 1st Wigton Baden-Powell Scout Group travelled to the Isle of Skye to take part in the silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions.

Tackling the gold hike were Douglas Hodgson and Ben Norman and both Scouts are said to have done incredibly well, hiking in the Cuillins and passing near to the Old Man of Storr.

The Scouts were wild camping, so enjoying spectacular scenery and wildlife, including a magnificent stag, whales, and seals.

Douglas and Ben had to carry all their kit ad food for the four days they were hiking but managed well and subject to logs being written up, should pass.

Meanwhile, Felix Green, Ben Roberts, Jack Naylor and Aled Ashburner took on the Silver hike, again in the Cuillins and also wild camping.

Felix had to drop out after twisting his ankle but Ben, Jack and Aled carried on, completing the hike, with Jack in particular taking many photos of the scenery.

All three are expected to pass the silver award on completion of their written logs and will then move on to the gold award.

At the end of the hikes, the scouts had a day of water activities, fishing with a barbecue at Broadford where they were based before travelling back down to Wigton.

Group leader, Julie Bryceson, said: “I am incredibly proud of all the hard work and effort the Scouts put in, prior to and during the actual hikes.

“Map and compass work, menu planning, equipment and clothing all had to be planned and agreed between the Scouts and they got on very well with Scouts from across the country, who were also taking part in the hikes.”

Two of the Scouts, Aled and Jack got back from Skye and had just a few days to unpack and repack before heading off for summer camp in Ireland, where the Troop are camping at Lough Dan, near Dublin.

Scout meetings will resume in September. The group has two troops, with one meeting on Tuesday and the other on Thursday evenings, anyone interested in a place is asked to contact Julie via email juliebryceson@hotmail.com, through the Facebook page or their website.
