NORTHWICH Mayor Kevin Rimmer has urged the community to come up with ideas to ensure the legacy of Terry Murphy can be preserved in the town.

Tributes have continued to flood in for the popular councillor, who sadly passed away on Saturday during the Northwich parkrun.

Parkrun volunteers, as well as Terry’s friends and family, have organised a special tribute run on Saturday and are collecting donations to fund a park bench in his memory.

And this shows just how highly he was regarded in the town, according to Kevin, who was ‘overwhelmed’ after hearing the news.

“Terry was a friend as well as a councillor, and I send my condolences to his family,” he said.

“It is clear to see how highly he was regarded, and it was an absolute honour and privilege to have served with him on the town council.

“Terry was a genuinely lovely guy and will be a massive loss to both Northwich and local football, which he was extremely passionate about from grassroots levels.”

Mayor Kevin Rimmer wants a lasting legacy for Terry

Kevin believes a suitable tribute must now be secured for Terry, and this decision should be made by the people of Northwich.

“We need to try and take a positive out of this negative and I would like the community to come up with a lasting legacy for Terry,” he continued.

“He was all about the community and always went the extra mile and did everything possible to help people in the town.

“Terry put his heart and soul into Northwich, and I can honestly say that I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about him, which speaks volumes about him as a man.

“It is only right and proper to ask the people of Northwich what they feel should be done to ensure his legacy can live on in the town.”

A tribute was also issued by Northwich Town Council Clerk Chris Shaw, who stated Terry’s loss would be felt by the whole community.

“We are all shocked and extremely saddened by the news that Cllr Terry Murphy passed away at the weekend after taking part in the Northwich parkrun,” he added.

“Terry was instrumental in bringing the parkrun to Northwich and his big smile and enthusiasm greeted everybody who took part, making him an inspiration to so many runners.”

“He served the community for many years through football and as a councillor, where his passion for the town and straight talking will be very much missed.

“Northwich has lost one of its best and this is a tragic loss, not only for his family, but to the town and those who knew him best.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.”
