A MURDER investigation has been launched after a male died following a serious assault in Hough Green this afternoon, Sunday.

The incident happened at approximately 3.20pm close to the Hammer and Pincers pub on Liverpool Road.

Two people, a 35-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman have since been arrested by Cheshire Police.

A large police presence is still in attendance at the scene, including a forensic team who have erected tents on the pub car park.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 3.20pm today, police responded to reports of a serious assault near the Hammer and Pincers pub on Liverpool Road.

"The victim, a 47-year-old local man, sustained serious injuries which sadly have subsequently proved fatal.

"A 35-year-old man and 39-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with the incident."

The victim has been named locally as Chris Thornton, manager of the Hammer and Pincers pub.

Chief Inspector Simon Parsonage, who is in charge of policing in Widnes, said:  “Understandably the local community will be concerned about what has happened. 

"I would like to reassure those living locally that we are doing everything we can to establish the circumstances of what has happened and extra officers will be patrolling the area overnight and into the morning to provide reassurance. 

"If you have any concerns at all please speak to an officer.”
