A HUNGARIAN food festival is coming to Warrington for the first time to give people a taste of the country’s delicacies.

Warrington Market will be hosting the event in its forecourt on Saturday, September 14, as part of a collaboration with Hungarian Sausage Shop and Cheshire Chimney Cake.

There is expected to be around 15 stalls where food lovers can get a small sense of what Budapest – famous for its market halls – is like.

You will be able to try authentic goulash, which is one of Hungary’s national dishes, as well as langos which is one of the country’s most popular street food dishes.

It is a type of fried bread, sometimes called Hungarian pizza, that is usually topped with sour cream and cheese.

There will be a range of desserts as well including chestnut puree, mezeskalacs which is Hungarian gingerbread made with honey and topped with icing and chimney cakes.

A chimney cake is a ribbon-like dough that is wound around a wooden cylinder before being dusted with sugar and baked in a rotisserie oven.

Visitors will be able to wash that down with pálinka – fruit brandy – or Hungarian wine and beer while enjoying traditional Hungarian music.

There will also be face painting and hair braiding for the kids.

Tamás Madarasi-Pap, who grew up in Komló in southern Hungary, runs Cheshire Chimney Cake and is one of the organisers.

He said: “With the smells and tastes and how it looks and feels, we hope to bring a bit of Hungary to Warrington. It will only be a small event but we want to make it about the quality where everyone can enjoy themselves.”
