OAKFIELD Primary School in Widnes has become the first in Halton to achieve 'Elklan Communication Friendly Setting' accreditation.

The accolade is awarded to schools that have trained and supported staff to understand and improve communication skills of pupils.

Headteacher Cath Khan was presented with the accreditation by Halton MP Derek Twigg at a school assembly recently, with Ditton ward councillor Eddie Dourley also in attendance.

Mrs Khan said: "Oakfield Primary School staff are delighted to have achieved the Elklan Communication Friendly Award, the only school in Halton to have achieved this status."

Derek Twigg MP said: "I am delighted that Oakfield Primary School have achieved this accreditation, understanding how children use and access language is vitally important.

"I believe that every child should have the opportunity to leave school a confident and articulate communicator."
