TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known Orford resident who set up the Old People's Welfare Group.

Dorothy Corless, widow of Fredrick Corless, appeared in the obituaries column of this week's Warrington Guardian after she passed away aged 92 on May 12.

Mrs Corless was part of an Army family and was born in Tidworth, Wiltshire, before moving to Orford.

The former Rylands and St Margaret’s Junior School secretary was a life long member of St Margaret’s and All Hallows Church, being baptised, confirmed and married there and was always involved in activities including Walking Day, summer fetes and Christmas fairs.

The PCC, Mother’s Union, head of kindergarten and Sunday school member held the licence of, and took booking for Orford Church Hall, built in the time of her father in the 1930s.

She was also a member of the Orford drama group and on occasions stood in as an organist and produced the church magazine.

In the 1960s she set up the Old People’s Welfare Group where she cooked a Christmas dinner for elderly residents of the church before getting involved with the 9th Warrington Group and the 1st Warrington Group where she played the piano for the cub scout rehearsals of The Gang Show and was district secretary for Warrington Scouts.

The kind-hearted mum also wrote The Weekly Orford News article about local church activities, delivered meals for the WRVS and was involved in her husband's teams in the Warrington quiz league.

On top of juggling so many different responsibilities, she also enjoyed reading, crosswords, gardening and travelling around the world visiting Jerusalem, Egypt and cruising in the Caribbean.

Mrs Corless leaves two sons.

Her funeral took place on May 30, at St Margaret’s Church.
