A RUNCORN cyclist whose parents have fought cancer is preparing to pedal 300-miles in aid of life-saving research and needs your support.

Martin Newton will take part in North West Cancer Research's Cycle of Hope challenge to show solidarity for parents Bruce and Christine, who were diagnosed with throat and breast cancer respectively.

The 45-year-old from The Heath in Runcorn will travel 300-miles over four days from July 4-7.

Both of Martin's parents received treatment in the North West, with his mum only finishing her treatment in March this year.

Now, Martin wants to do something to ensure that others who are diagnosed with cancer can have the same chance as his parents so has chosen to raise money for research which will help develop breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

He said: "I really wanted to take on Cycle of Hope to show support for my parents who have both had cancer in recent years.

"They received life-saving treatment that wouldn't have been possible without years of research and now I want to help others.

"During the challenge, I will be cycling through Wexford where my parents-in-law lived, so this really does have an emotional connection for me and my family.

"I have lots of fundraising activities planned before the cycle and I've set up a Just Giving page to help get as many donations as possible, my aim is to raise at least £2,000."

Despite being an experienced mountain biker, Martin has never completed long-distance routes on the road and is currently undertaking training rides to increase his endurance in preparation for the 300-mile challenge.

Martin and his family are also busy fundraising by hosting dinners at his home for friends and family in exchange for donations.

He has also been cycling on a stationary bike in his workplace to raise further money and he will be using his sporting contacts for sponsorship opportunities.

Alistair Richards, chief executive of North West Cancer Research, said: "Martin's drive to complete this challenge in support of his family is an inspiration.

"I have no doubt that his enthusiasm for fundraising will help North West Cancer Research to fund lifesaving cancer research here in the North West where we have invested £3.2m into cancer research over the last two years."

Sponsored by Rutherford Cancer Centres who operate a national network of cancer centres, cyclists will cover England, Wales and The Republic of Ireland between 4-7th July 2019.
