A NEW dancing group for older people is making waves in the community after being set up in Burtonwood.

Mature Movers is a dancing group for ladies over 50 and was set up by Sarah Gough, whose dad lives in the village.

Sarah says she is delighted with how well the dance group is progressing.

“We have held two classes so far and they have both gone down really well with everyone who has attended,” she said.

“The first session was held towards the end of April, and it had a fantastic response with 15 ladies coming down to dance.

“I’ve been made up with how people have taken to it so far and they always say how great a place it is to make new friends.

“We also get people who are recovering after being poorly so it is really good for them to get involved in as well.”

Sarah teaches classes all over Warrington but was keen to start sessions in Burtonwood due to the proportion of elderly residents who live there.

“I teach several dancing classes in venues throughout the town on behalf of the Warrington Wolves Foundation or ones I have set up myself,” said Sarah.

“A lot of my time is spent in Burtonwood as my dad lives here, so I wanted to run a class for the elderly demographic.

“I mainly wanted to do something for older residents to enjoy and get involved in, and it is a great way for people over 50 to keep fit by dancing.”

A variety of different dancing and music forms are chosen by the group, with feel good favourites from yester years always high on the agenda.

“We dance to a little bit of everything during the classes, but our favourites are feel good tunes as everyone enjoys listening to them,” Sarah added.

“Motown songs are particularly popular, so we dance to tracks from the likes of The Temptations, The Four Tops and Aretha Franklin.

“In terms of the type of dancing we do, it depends on the music choice, but we have already started to perform Irish dancing, salsa and disco.”

The group also goes on regular social outings to watch dance-related theatre performances at venues such as Parr Hall.

Mature Movers meet at St Michael’s Church Hall every Monday between 11.30am and 12.30pm.

The classes are aimed at ladies aged over 50, with the first class being free and following sessions costing £3 each time.
