AHEAD of the Cheshire East Council election on Thursday, meet the Liberal Democrat candidates battling for votes around Knutsford and Wilmslow.

Chris Wetherell, Knutsford candidate

Chris is a life-long Knutsford resident and at 26 years old is one of the party’s younger candidates. He hopes his youth can bring a fresh and vibrant perspective to the council.

As a history graduate, his passions include historical preservation, architecture and urban planning, which he intends to draw upon to ensure Knutsford retains its unique character.

He also strongly believes in protecting the environment and is an ardent supporter of rewilding local ecosystems.

Key issues that Chris plans to address are improving traffic safety in the town centre, pushing for better transport links to neighbouring towns and fighting disproportionally large cuts to our local schools.

Birgitta Hoffman, Wilmslow West candidate

Knutsford Guardian:

Birgitta and her husband have lived in Wilmslow since 1997.

She is the academic coordinator for the Wilmslow Community Archaeology Group and has volunteered at a number of local environmental and community groups in the Wilmslow area.

Oliver Romain, Wilmslow West candidate

Knutsford Guardian:

Oliver lives in Wilmslow with his wife Janet and two young sons, aged nine and two.

He is self-employed and active in the local community having volunteered at Gorsey Bank School and launched Wilmslow Freecycle.

Damian Carr, Lacey Green candidate

Knutsford Guardian:

Damian has lived in Lacey Green for around eight years and has two teenage sons, four grown up step-children and five grandchildren.

He is currently working on developing the MancSpirit Charity which he founded to use creativity and the arts to inspire positive well-being, especially helping people who are struggling with mental health issues.

He was invited to become a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in recognition of his work within the community sector.

Chris Fortune, Handforth candidate

Knutsford Guardian:

A Handforth resident of many years, Chris is a former police officer who also has experience in the care sector as team leader at a residential home for children and young adults.

Ann Barlow, Chelford candidate

Knutsford Guardian:

Ann has lived in Plumley (part of the Chelford ward) for 33 years and has played an active part in the community during that time.

A former parish councillor, she has a keen interest in ensuring that local developments take into account the nature of the surrounding environment.

Having retired from a career in education, she is concerned about diminishing social care support impacting on the physical and mental well-being of local children.

She has been a Lay Reader at St Oswald's Church, Lower Peover, for over 20 years.

She is married with two grown-up children and both she and her husband have been active in Liberal Democrat campaigning since the inception of the party
