AN EASTER extravaganza will take place on Thursday to celebrate 30 years since Widnes’ famous Championship decider.

On Sunday, April 16, in 1989, Widnes took on Wigan in a highly anticipated clash which saw the black and whites emerge victorious and claim the Championship title.

A crowd of over 17,000 descended on Naughton Park that day to see a Martin Offiah hat-trick seal a 32-18 win and see Widnes lift the silverware.

The event will take place at The Parklands Cub, with activities planned to appeal to people of all ages.

From 5pm to 7pm, family activities including a children’s egg hunt a soft play area and face painting are available.

Later on in the evening, more events are scheduled such as an evening quiz, karaoke, a raffle and of course, a screening of the Championship decider.

As well as this, food will be available in the form of a hog roast, which will be cooked and served by current Viking’s forward Hep Cahill.

Other special guests making an appearance will be former players Steve O’Neill, who made over 200 appearances for the club, and David Hulme, who donned the black and white jersey over 400 times in the 80s and 90s.

The event is being run by the Widnes Independent Supporters Society, and all proceeds will go to Widnes Vikings RLFC.

It is expected to be a popular event, with an estimated 150 set to venture down and participate in the festivities.

Tickets are available from The Parklands Club, and are priced at £10 for adults, £5 for children and families of up to four can purchase a group ticket for £20.
