IT is very worrying to read about the number of police pursuits of stolen cars in St Helens.

Often this appears to involve teenage suspects.

Do these young people not take note of tragic circumstances, such as the death of little Violet?

The recent incident (reported in last week’s Star) where a car that was being pursued by police crashed into a lamppost at Taylor Park could have had terrible consequences.

It happened on a Sunday afternoon while children were playing in the park.

Like many people have said, this was just yards from where Violet and her grandmother were struck two years ago.

The amount of chases we hear about on Prescot Road – the route between St Helens and Huyton is alarming.

I’m fully behind the call for Violet’s Law – that would see stronger punishments for dangerous drivers who kill.

But we also need to take firmer action against these reckless drivers who think it is acceptable to tear around in stolen cars at high speeds while police chase them.

This is not the Wild West. These are streets and parks where our children are walking and playing.

What can be done to get through to these maniacs of the roads?
