SOLDIERS' headstones from the First World War which were removed to make room for the Mersey Gateway are being returned to their resting place.
Mike McNicholas, secretary of the Widnes Royal British Legion, has been in contact with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission about bringing three men back to their burial place in the old St Mary's Dock Cemetery in West Bank.
After conversations with the War Commission, Mike, along with Paul Wright, Halton Borough Council open spaces manager, finally received the news that the memorial stones will be replaced.
The soldiers all fought in the First World War and include Lance Sergeant Douglas Eric Basnett, South Lancashire Regiment, who died on the November 12, 1917 aged 22.
Private Joseph Dixon Grenadier Guards died on October 21, 1915 after he joined as a reservist and was called upon.
Lance Corporal Harry Hall, South Lancashire Regiment, died on July 20, 1916 on the hospital ship Salta on his way home after suffering from wounds received from the battle of the Somme.
Mike from the Widnes Royal British Legion assured that a fitting return in conjunction with Widnes Academy and the people of West Bank will be organised to welcome the heroes home in due course.
