A PRIMARY school in Widnes has spent the past month enriching children's health and school life in a double celebration.

St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in St Michael's Road is the latest UK school to receive the SAPERE Bronze award for philosophy for children (P4C).

P4C boosts children’s reasoning, social skills and overall attainment and aims to give children the tools to become critical and caring thinkers and lifelong learners.

The children and staff have embraced the scheme with enthusiasm and work collaboratively and creatively in their discussions.

St Michael's has also become part of the National School Breakfast Programme which was set up by Family Action and Magic Breakfast to ensure no child is too hungry to learn.

The children are now having a healthy breakfast in school every morning and a ‘class of the week’ enjoy a class breakfast in the school hall each week.

St Michael’s is the first school in Halton to be part of the programme which is funded by the DFE to promote children’s health and readiness for learning.

Head teacher, Paul Loughran. said: "We are really excited to be part of these two fantastic initiatives which enrich the children’s daily life at school.

"The staff at St Michael’s Catholic primary school work tirelessly with our children and families to provide an excellent standard of education and importantly to develop each and every child as an independent learner ready to face the wider challenges of life."
