A RECKLESS arson attack that destroyed a youth centre has gone unpunished.

No arrests have been made for the blaze that ravaged  The Lord Taverners Woodside Youth Club in Runcorn on July 4.

Police confirmed today that they had no updates on the incident as new pictures were released revealing the extent of the damage.

The images were contained in a planning document seeking to knock down the centre which is beyond repair.

The photographs show how the fire caused large chunks of the roof and walls to cave in.

No one was harmed but expensive office equipment was completely destroyed.

Residents have said the destroyed building has since been targeted by vandals in smaller scale arson attacks causing further damage.

At the time, police said they believed the centre was targeted deliberately at around 3am.

They appealed for witnesses after discovering an abandoned vehicle at the site, which was thought to have been driven up the path and deliberately set alight.

But six months on, no one has been caught for the incident.

Services run out the historic Lord Taverners building included the Canal Adventure Boat social inclusion project and National Citizenship Service (NCS).

Staff based at the site had hoped the centre could be restored but it is now set to be demolished after asbestos was discovered in the building’s shell.

However, a new site for the venture has been identified and it is hoped a new youth club will be up and running in 2019.

Chris Hindley, chief executive of charity YouthFeds which is supporting the centre,  said: “The arson at Woodside was extensive and investigations revealed the presence of asbestos.

“As a result, the building will have to be demolished.

“The services (NCS, Talent Match and the youth club) that were run out of the building and have been temporarily rehoused at different venues including the Grange Community Centre.

“Working with the local authority, they have identified an amazing space at Shopping City for a number of agencies to deliver services from. We are working with them to re-establish the youth club there and will hope to see it running in the New Year."
