PLANS have been approved that would see big changes to the iconic Merseyside bar made famous when a horse was pictured wandering inside.

Moodz Bar in Birkenhead town centre proved a huge hit on social media back in 2016 when the equine – later revealed to be a skewbald cob named Dawn – was pictured loitering outside.

This week, plans were approved to transform the bar – which is believed to have closed later that year – into a nail bar and apartment.

They were submitted by applicant and Moreton resident Thi Mong Thu Mai, and will occupy the existing structure.

The proposals, submitted in October, said: “Situated in a prominent main road position in the heart of Birkenhead town centre, this historical three-level building has been used mainly for commercial purposes.

“The surrounding area mainly comprises shops, restaurants, pubs and apartments.

“The proposal is to accommodate a commercial ground floor unit and a two-bedroom first floor apartment within the existing building footprint.”

The horse was pictured by Prenton mum Holly Croall was revealed to belong to nearby resident Mandy Gill, who would take Dawn to the pub with her “every now and again”.

At the time, horse riding instructor Mandy said: “They’ve got nice people in there who make us feel welcome.

“I also take her into town occasionally, and people just get lifted. She puts a smile on their faces.”

Linda Ormrod, licensee of Moodz Bar at the time, added: “The lady who owns the horse drinks in here now and again. She takes it for a walk and it actually came in one day.

“The customers just accept it. It’s like it’s normal.”
