A TALENTED schoolgirl from Widnes is set to compete in America after being awarded north west Irish dancing champion.

Anna McDermott, 11, attends St Peter and Paul Catholic high school in Highfield Road, and dances for Loughran school of Irish dance in West Derby, Liverpool.

She recently travelled to Oldham to take part in the north west regional championships of Irish dancing and returned victorious.

Cath McDermott, Anna's mum, said: "Schools from all over the region took part and and there were around 40 girls in the competition.

"She is now north west champion, joint with another girl from Warrington, and has qualified for the world championships in America next April.

"She has danced for five years at Loughran school and loves Irish dancing.

"She travels all over the UK and sometimes over to Ireland for competitions and has won many championships at smaller competitions but this is her first major win."
