THE Golden Gates may be gone but a new structure is being put in place while the work is carried out.

As previously reported in the Warrington Guardian, the historic gates were removed in October as serious restoration work is needed.

Now a frieze is being put in place at the site in front of the Town Hall on Sankey Street.

It will contain an image of the gates as well as provide historic information about the gates and the nature of the work taking place.

There will also be a viewing area.

The frieze is due to be ready by the end of the week.

Warrington Borough Council has also confirmed the traditional Christmas tree will also be in Bank Park but closer to the Town Hall than its usual spot.

The £500,000 restoration scheme will see the Grade II listed structure restored to its former glory.

It is believed the gates were originally intended as a gift for Queen Victoria before being purchased for the town by councillor Frederick Monks.

The previous refurbishment was carried out in 1978-79.
