A PRIMARY school in Lymm is in the running for a new all weather running track.

Cherry Tree Primary School has been selected to compete for funding from Aviva and needs the public’s votes to succeed.

It hopes install an all weather running track to provide the perfect place for pupils and the community to exercise.

While the children would use it during the day and after school, groups from the village will use it in the evenings and at weekends.

Helen Graham, head teacher, said “Our aim is for an all-weather, accessible surface to go around the perimeter of our playing field to ensure that every child, including those in wheelchairs, can be active in school for at least 30 minutes each day.

“The new track will help each child to meet that target and ensure the whole school can take part together. As part of the project, a new ramp will replace the steep slope that is currently used to access the playing fields, making it much safer and more accessible for all.

“Our school has joined forces with Lymm runners to set up a running group for adults at the school on Friday mornings.

“The beginners group has already seen more than 60 adults from the village follow the Couch to 5K programme.

“Some of the participants have been inspired to take part in 10k, half marathons and even a marathon as a result. Our current path is not safe in wet weather – so adult runners must risk muddy, boggy sections during the winter months, whilst the children are unable to use it at all during the school day. A new, safe running track would allow us to get even more members of the wider community involved.”

The track would be used regularly by St Mary’s pre0school, available for scouts/guides and other youth groups, by Lymm runners as a training track for longer or charity runs, as well as being used to host inter-school athletics competitions.

The PTA and families have already been fundraising for the project but the money from Arriva would help them cross the line.
