A SCHEME aimed at helping the elderly is asking for donations to give vulnerable people a present this Christmas.

Halton Borough Council's Sure Start to Later Life is organising a Christmas party for clients and needs tinned goods and food items to make up hampers for the free raffle prize.

The team works with older, often vulnerable, lonely and isolated people, living within the community.

For some, this Christmas party will be the only time during the festive season they will have the opportunity to have some company and enjoy getting out and meeting people.

The team is expecting about 100 people and is aiming to give everyone a Christmas card and present.

Council officers are collecting unwanted gifts, alcohol, tinned biscuits, chocolates, and anything else which may be suitable to be given as a gift.

Halton Borough Council's executive board member for health and wellbeing, Councillor Marie Wright, said: "We have been truly overwhelmed with the response we received in previous years from Halton Borough Council staff, their friends and families and local business, large and small.

"People's generosity during these difficult financial times is remarkable and with your help, we aim to make this year even better."

If you are able to make a contribution and would like to donate to a good cause, please drop off any items at Grangeway Community Centre in Grangeway, Runcorn.

If you have any queries, or need an item collecting, contact one of the team on 01928 569498, or email suzanne.toner@halton.gov.uk
