THE Wire have confirmed the signing of hooker Danny Walker from Widnes Vikings.

Warrington-born Walker – a former Crosfields and Rylands Sharks junior – joins his hometown club on a three-year deal.

The Wire have parted with an undisclosed sum for Walker's services, but Widnes chief executive James Rule said in a statement that "enhanced compensation" had been paid to the Vikings for the England Knights squad member.

Wolves are believed to have beaten off strong competition for the hooker's signature, with Wigan and St Helens rumoured to have been interested also.

Having made his first-team debut for the Vikings last year, Walker made a name for himself among Wire fans for his eye-catching display from the bench during the Challenge Cup clash between the two at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Head coach Steve Price says he has developed “a strong interest” in the 19-year-old throughout the year and is looking forward to the competition he can provide for Daryl Clark, Dec Patton and Morgan Smith in the dummy-half role.

“I heard good things from all my coaching staff who have a very high opinion of Danny having come through our local system,” he said.

“From that, I took a strong interest in him and I see a lot of improvement in him as he’s only young.

“I’ve watched him in a number of Widnes games throughout the season. He’s got a lot speed and is quite creative and tough.

“I’m excited to get him to our club and for the future. There’s a lot more to come from him.”

Walker becomes Wolves’ fifth new addition for the 2019 campaign, adding to the signings of Blake Austin, Jason Clark, Matt Davis and Lama Tasi.

He is currently with the England Knights squad in Australia preparing for a two-match tour of Papua New Guinea alongside six of his new Warrington teammates.
