CATALANS Dragons players who did not cast their votes for the Man of Steel seriously have been asked to make a donation to the Steve Prescott Foundation.

Reports have surfaced that the Rugby Football League has contacted the club over the votes of some of its players for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel.

Some nominated former Dragons teammates - including Wigan Warriors' French players Romain Navarrete and Morgan Escare - while there was one third-choice vote for Hull KR's Danny Addy even though he missed the entire season with a knee injury.

The Man of Steel award is awarded rugby league's player of the year and in 2014 was renamed in honour of former Saints fullback Steve after his heroic battle with a rare cancer.

Steve passed away aged 39 in November 2013, and a petition of more than 12,000 signatures calling for the award to be renamed the following year.

A spokesman for the governing body said the RFL Compliance Department has contacted Catalans management to "express disappointment and suggest the players made a donation to the Steve Prescott charity".

The club were given a week to respond and have agreed to implement the sanction, although it is believed this has not yet been done due to some players being on an end-of-season break.

An RFL spokesman added: "From the RFL’s point of view that’s a suitable outcome - the point has been made that it is unacceptable for players to treat the voting disrespectfully, particularly given the attachment of Steve’s name to the award and the respect in which he is held.

"The players should also now be aware that such disrespect will be seen by the rugby league public."
