A NEW community allotment is set to be transformed thanks to residents volunteering their time.

The allotment, located off Grangeway in Runcorn, was created by Halton Housing, following the development of 40 affordable rental homes nearby.

The space has now been handed over to four residents, who have signed up to volunteer their time to transform the space, including three plots accessible for people in wheelchairs.

The volunteers hope to eventually fill the allotment with herbs, wildflowers, fruit and vegetables.

Debbie Jameson, Halton Housing customer engagement officer, said: “The allotment brings a host of opportunities for residents including the opportunity to meet other local residents who have a collaborative interest in the outdoors and gardening.

"We also want to encourage better ownership of local green spaces, developed by and used by people creating a greater sense of satisfaction and achievement in the local community.

"We look forward to seeing the allotment develop.”

Once completed, the allotment will be open to all members of the community to make use and enjoy.
