THE lasting legacy of baby who died minutes after being born lives on after a crochetathon was held in her memory.

Many gathered at Hobbycraft at the Junction Nine Retail Park on Saturday to create clothes to be donated to hospitals for premature babies that have died.

Sarah Wiseman, whose daughter Fern was born at 23 weeks and one day at Warrington Hospital, said: "She was perfect in so many ways, with long fingers, and toes and the most beautiful button nose.

"She took her last breath on my chest and only survived a few precious minutes with us.

"Being faced with the unthinkable we didn't have any clothes tiny enough to fit her and the hospital very kindly provided us with a beautifully knitted gown and hat.

"Both of which were a little too big for her. Yet, these treasured items provided us with so much comfort.

"Knowing she was dressed in these clothes, as well as, the handmade blankets we wrapped her up in, helped us irrefutably in this unthinkable time that we were faced with.

"We looked at her with so much affection and reflected on how cherished these items we had been given were to us.

"From that moment, while sat in the Butterfly Bereavement Suite, myself and my mum, decided that it would become our mission to help provide items of clothing like this to other babies born too soon.

"To help give other parents, who might find themselves facing the unfathomable, the treasured items that we now harboured close to our hearts."

One week after Fern had died, Sarah found a crocheting group, who meet every Saturday at Hobbycraft, off Winwick Road.

She said: "I emailed 'The Wee Hookers' keen to get involved and explained our reasons in wanting to make tiny baby clothes.

"Being first timers to the crochet club, my mum and I were utterly hopeless but we were driven by determination and Fern's memory.

"At that meeting the lovely crochet group came up with the idea of the Angel Baby Crochetathon."
