MP Derek Twigg praised the efforts of year seven and eight pupils at The Grange Academy for taking on a 'challenging academic topic' as part of The Scholars Programme.

The scheme, which places PhD researchers in schools to deliver university-style tutorials based on their own research, is currently focusing on a course entitled Geography – The Anthropocene v Deep Time with tutor Dominic Coe from University of Liverpool.

The Scholars Programme, which is run by The Brilliant Club, aims to increase the number of pupils from under-represented backgrounds progressing to highly-selective universities.

Derek Twigg said: “It was great to visit The Grange Academy and meet pupils taking part in The Scholars Programme.

"I was very impressed at how they engaged with such a complex and challenging academic topic.

"It just goes to show what young people from Halton can achieve if we give them the opportunity."

Ian Critchely, principal, added: "His visit was to celebrate the fantastic achievements of our students on The Scholars Programme.

"The academic achievements of these students will prepare them well for their future studies and I fully support initiatives such as The Brilliant Club, as it prepares them well for the rigours of the curriculum.

"The students listened to Mr Twigg’s role in Westminster and also took the opportunity to tell us what positive changes have already begun at The Grange Academy and what they would like to see in our community.

"What a brilliant opportunity to voice their thoughts and ideas, all of which were articulated superbly."
