A YOUNG mum found herself in a horror movie scene when her drink and drug crazed new boyfriend tried to attack her with two huge machetes.

Mum-of-three Rebecca Birch only escaped after she plunged 25 feet to the ground from a tiny window ledge at his third floor flat when “possessed” William Jones deliberately swung one of the lethal weapons at her neck.

Although badly injured she miraculously survived the fall and meanwhile Jones armed himself with another knife and a baseball bat and refused to leave his home.

The police siege lasted three hours during which armed officers, a trained negotiator and the force helicopter were deployed until he finally gave himself up.

A judge today jailed 44-year-old Jones for 11 years with an extended licence of four years and described him as “a very dangerous person” and said his “emotional detachment was a highly relevant factor.”

He also pointed out that he is “unpredictable” and when he takes drink and drugs he is completely different person.

Judge David Aubrey, QC, described Jones as “terrorising” his victim and said that the knives and weapons he had in his home demonstrated his “desire and seeking of dominance and power and at the very least a fascination for lethal weapons.”

Miss Birch, 29, told how he had looked “possessed” and she started praying to her recently deceased mum and nan ”because she thought you were going to kill her and you could easily have done so.”

The judge said that he had swung the machete type knife, about two feet long, “really fast towards her neck, aiming for her neck. She was at your mercy on a ledge.”

When he was arrested in the flat which he had completely trashed, for attempted murder, he said, ‘When I get out then you’ll get an attempted murder.’

Liverpool Crown Court heard that petite Miss Birch’s nightmare began after they returned to his flat in Bechers, off Hough Green Road, Widnes, after a night out on March 24 this year.

They had been going out for about six weeks and she was surprised that he was drinking as she thought he was teetotal.

Once back she saw him snorting a line of cocaine and while in the bathroom getting ready for bed she noticed a change in his voice and chillingly heard him saying to himself, ’she’s going to have to hide. Where’s my knives?’

When she went into his bedroom she was confronted by him holding two kitchen knives, one with a large curved blade, and she fled in terror back to the bathroom and could hear him trying to break open the lock and kicking the door.

He was saying, ‘we’re going to have to make her pay for this, she’s going to bleed for this’, said Rob Jones, prosecuting.

“The tone of his voice was very unusual, growling and she was very very frightened.”

Being “a lady of some resource” and knowing he had the flat keys in his pocket she decided to try to reason with him and suggested they go outside for a cigarette.

“There was a groan in his voice which made her really scared and she prayed to her mum and nan…..She screamed for help but no-one came. She was trapped in the bathroom with no prospect of help,"said Mr Jones.

She hit upon the idea of suddenly opening the door taking him off guard and when she yanked it open he stumbled in and fell into the bath.

“She immediately ran to the door but then turned round and was horrified to see a look of almost obsession in his eyes, she described them as ‘burning with anger’.

Miss Birch fled to another bedroom, which had been ransacked, and she opened the window to cry for help.

“At that point he was able to get into the room, he was snarling and she was absolutely petrified.”

She climbed onto the narrow ledge and when he swung the machete at her neck she fell 25 foot to the ground.

Despite agonising pain from a cracked vertebrae and a badly fractured right wrist, petrified Miss Birch started to crawl away fearing a further attack but fortunately concerned neighbours had alerted the police.

A woman police officer found the shivering victim, who was just in her nightwear, lying on the ground “extremely distressed and she kept asking ‘have you got him?’.

“She would not let go of the officer saying ‘please don’t let him get me’.

Police found four knives in his home, a baseball bat and a small bag of cannabis and it was obvious from the worktop that he had taken cocaine.

When interviewed he said it was the first time he had drunk for four years and after taking cocaine he could not recall what happened afterwards but said he did not intend to hurt her.

Miss Birch was hospitalised for five days and sat in the public gallery today still wearing a back brace and with difficulties walking.

In her impact statement she told how she had been in agonising pain and felt like she was a burden to her family and felt like a bad mum as she had not been able to do the usual activities with her children.

As well as her physical injuries, including a deformed wrist, she has been left suffering nightmares involving knives and has started having panic attacks.

“It has been a horrendous experience for the last three months and taken away the life I knew from me. I will always have back problems and my wrist will never be the same again and I will always have mental scars,” she stated.

John Rowan, defending, said that Jones, who has previous convictions including assault, wanted it to be known:“He is absolutely ashamed of his behaviour. He was genuinely upset when he heard about her injuries.”

He added that Jones came across as emotionally detached which was confirmed in a psychiatric report. “He accepts she must have been terrified.”

Jones pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent, affray, damaging the victim’s phone and possessing cannabis.

After the hearing Miss Birch, who lives in Liverpool, said, “I want to try to find closure and move on with my life.”

The judge imposed a lifetime restraining order on Jones.
