A CAT was thrown into the Manchester Ship Canal near The Deck in Runcorn.
Fortunately the cat survived but the cruelty has shocked animal lovers who have branded whoever who did it as 'evil' and 'scum'.
The incident is believed to have happened between 11pm last night and 3am this morning.
Owner Ami Garner posted messages on Facebook warning people to be vigilant.
She said two boys had thrown her cat over the railings into the canal. Ami posted: "Ben (cat) is in shock as he won't come near us. Please tell others to check their cats."

Police are now investigating.
Chief inspector Sarah Heath at Runcorn Police Station, said: “This was a cruel and callous act and we are determined to find the person responsible.
“Thankfully the cat has survived the incident but its owner is understandably very distressed by what has happened.
“Investigations into the incident are ongoing and if anyone has any information about it please call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 33158, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Officers investigating this incident have now arrested a 16-year-old boy from Runcorn on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to a cat.
He is currently in police custody assisting officers with their enquiries.

He is also being held on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to a cat.
Officers would like to reassure the public that the cat is safe and well.
It has been assessed by a vet and has been returned to its owner.
