A RUNCORN man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent following yesterday's fire at the University of Chester Academy High School.

The 55-year-old is currently assisting officers with their investigations into the incident.

The alarm was raised at 6am on Sunday, February 25, and 12 fire engines pumps and an aerial appliance were dispatched to the school in Shipbrook Road, Rudheath.

It is believed that the fire broke out in two separate roofs at the school.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Following investigations officers have now arrested a 55-year-old man from Runcorn on suspicion of arson with intent.

"The man is currently being held in police custody where he is assisting officers with their enquiries.

"Enquiries in relation to the fire remain ongoing and anyone with information that could assist officers is asked to call 101, quoting incident 174 of February 25.

"Information can also be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Firefighters used several mains jet and hose reels to tackle the fire and wore breathing apparatus due to concerns of potential asbestos.

The fire was contained in around three hours and crews are expected to remain at the scene for most of Sunday to dampen down and make the site safe.

Officers from Cheshire Police assisted with road closures in the area.

The school remains closed for all pupils on Monday, February 26 and it is urging parents to check the school website for updates.

In a statement, UCAN said: "There has been a fire at UCAN.

"Senior staff are on site and we advise all staff and students to please stay away from the building while it is dealt with.

"The Academy will be closed to all pupils on Monday, February 26.

"Please monitor the school website and social media networks for further updates."
