LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn came to Widnes today to visit a flourishing engineering firm.

He came ahead of Thursday’s referendum to highlight the risk of leaving the EU to jobs across the north west.

Hutchinson’s Engineering manufactures wind turbines to sell across Europe and fears their business would suffer if Britain left the EU.

The firm which has been designing and manufacturing telecommunications structures for more than 35 years believes jobs will be safer if the country remains in the EU.

Mr Corbyn reflected their views, saying: “These next hours will shape Britain’s future for years to come.

“Thursday’s decision can be boiled down to one crucial question: what’s best for jobs in Britain, rights at work and our future prosperity?

“Do we remain to protect jobs and prosperity in Britain or do we step into an unknown future and leave where a Tory-led Brexit risks economy recovery and threatens a bonfire of employment rights.”

Mr Corbyn was given a guided tour of the state-of-the-art £5 million engineering factory on Everite Road.

The company, which employs around 100 people, created 25 new jobs last year.

It is the only UK manufacturer of mid-wind turbines.

Managing director Dean Drinkwater said: “We have seen phenomenal growth in recent years and we are thrilled we now have the capacity to keep up with the renewable energy sector.”

Polling stations will be open tomorrow from 7am to 10pm.

Votes will be counted at the Select Security Stadium where a result is expected to be announced between 2am and 3am on Friday.
