REVIEW: Disney on Ice Silver Anniversary Tour

Liverpool Arena

MY last encounter with an ice rink resulted in an unplanned trip to A&E, so these days I'm happy to settle for watching other people skating - particularly if they happen to be in costume and answer to the name of Mickey.

You're never too old for a bit of Disney magic, and even for veteran Disney on Ice show-goers there are still plenty of surprises to enjoy in this latest production.

It is hard to believe the format has been around for 25 years but if you've got young children this silver anniversary show will be just as appealing as ever (the cost of the Disney merchandise on sale outside not quite so appealing however).

The format remains largely the same, this time Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck are tour guides taking the audience through a winter wonderland to visit magical worlds featuring The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan.

The best moves are reserved for the best songs, and Simba and Nala get their fair share of wow moments, with impressive lifts, jumps and even a dramatic 'headbanger' thrown in to keep the grown ups entertained.

Having been to a few shows previously, The Little Mermaid section felt a little tired despite the efforts of some dancing starfish, but Peter Pan with its flying fairies, pouting pirates and crafty crocs was a real highlight.

The biggest applause however was unsurprisingly reserved for the final section of the show.

I'm almost all Frozen'd out (well until Frozen 2 comes out) but if there was ever a film made for the ice rink then this is it.

You can't help but be thawed by the number of mini Anna and Elsas in the audience who were enthralled by Olaf and co. Along with some well timed sparks and clever lighting, this is a show to warm the coldest of hearts.

The show runs until Sunday.
