COUNCIL officials are warning of a scam pretending the caller has been awarded a grant.
Halton Trading Standards Officers said a resident, who is ex-directory, reported receiving an unsolicited phone call from someone calling themselves 'Jimmy'.
A spokesman added: He said that she had been awarded a government grant of £8,000 although he did not even know her name.
"He asked the resident for her bank details so that he could deposit the money directly into her account.
"She refused to give her details out over the phone and he explained that without them he would not be able to get the money to her.
"The consumer suggested that he sent it via the Post Office and the caller hung up."
Anyone affected should call specialist officers Linda or Sue on 0151 511 8785 or 0151 511 8775.
