THE search is on to find unsung heroes who have saved lives.

St John Ambulance is inviting Halton residents to tell them about their friends, relatives, work colleagues or strangers who have swung into action in an emergency.

The charity also wants to hear from anyone who champions first aid at school or in their community.

Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, who will be hosting this year’s awards ceremony, is grateful to first aiders for saving the life of her father, golf star Bernard Gallacher earlier this year.

She said: “First aid is a cause close to my heart.

“My father’s life was saved because the people around him knew first aid, and every day I am grateful that they had the skills and confidence to know what to do.

“First aid can be the difference between life and death and it’s usually down to the actions of bystanders, families and friends that lives are saved.”

Sue Killen, chief executive at St John Ambulance said: “The St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes awards give us a chance to celebrate and honour ordinary people who’ve done extraordinary things.

“We’re looking for anyone that’s gone out of their way to help people through first aid, from life savers, to campaigners, to teachers, to fundraisers.

‘Every year I am moved by the amazing nominees and their inspiring stories. They are all living proof that first aid can save lives. If you know someone who deserves recognition, nominate them for an Everyday Hero award.’

Finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in London on July 1.
