EDWARDIAN entertainers will turn the clock back as Widnes Market commemorates the start of the First World War this summer.

Strong men, escapologists, policemen and a recruiting sergeant promise to take shoppers back to 1914.

Actors and performers will re-enact scenes from yesteryear to show visitors what times were like just before the outbreak of The Great War.

Funfair rides will will be hand turned as they would have been in the day.

The donkeys will be back as the town is transformed into a seaside resort from Wednesday, July 23 to Saturday, July 26.

Halton Clr Ron Hignett, board member for physical environmentsaid: "This is a great way of commemorating World War I and showing people how people were entertained at that time.

"Our market traders are as enthusiastic about Widnes on Sea as the public are each year. Let's hope for some good weather to bring out the crowds.”

All parents or carers need to do is make purchases within the market to collect vouchers for the rides, all the other entertainment is free for all to watch and enjoy.
