IT is most commonly known for candy floss, donkey rides and bright lights, but Blackpool is about to get much darker this Halloween.

The Blackpool Tower Dungeons, conveniently located in Bank Hey Street in the busy tourist centre of Blackpool, offers live actors and the sights, smells and noises of some of the scariest times throughout history.

Do not be fooled, as this experience is still child-friendly for ages seven and above and provides just the right amount of fright and laughter for a fun family day out.

Queuing for the attraction passes quickly thanks to actors who stay in character and the performances don’t waver throughout the entire experience.

You are introduced to a mischievous jester, a sinister torturer and an unforgiving judge among many other actors who get a few screams and plenty of nervous laughs from the crowd.

For those who want something extra, there are interactive elements to get your heart racing as you feel blood-sucking leeches beneath your feet and come face-to-face with an evil witch.

Your group will travel around the depths of the dungeons for about an hour which is just enough time to emerge yourself in the journey and keep the children entertained.

But, the star of the show for anyone who loves to get their adrenaline pumping is the Drop Dead ride which adults will love, and brave children will want to ride again.

The gravity-drop ride is a favourite on the Pleasure Beach, but it feels much scarier as here you’re sentenced to the gallows for witchcraft and about to be hanged.

The Blackpool Tower Dungeons is where you can experience Halloween by getting up close and personal with the cruel evils of the past rather than the cartoon vampires and zombies that usually crowd this time of year.

For a creepy day out to keep everyone happy, it is well worth a visit. For more information go to thedungeons.com/blackpool/en
