Runcorn people are forced to go to dearer shops

When will the councillors who have the authority as to where and what is being built realise that once again they have ignored the voices of the Runcorn people by building a Tesco’s at Widnes?

Yet another supermarket which is not really necessary as Widnes has already got the golden end of the stick.

Wilkinsons, Marks & Spencers, Morrisons, ASDA, Iceland etc, compete for the people to look around for bargains as the supermarkets try to outdo each other on price.

This is good for the people of Widnes, but poor for Runcorn people, who if they do not have a car have to travel to Widnes for their weekly shopping by taxi, so any bargains they might get are swallowed by by getting back to their homes.

I recently got eight bottles of Lucozade for £3.98 at Quality Save, Widnes. In the Co-op at Runcorn they charged me £3.85 for four bottles of the same product.

That is just one of many examples of the difference in prices.

Runcorn people are forced to go to one of the dearest shops, that is the Co-op.

Why could we not have had the new Widnes Tescos and Widnes could have a new Co-op? Because Widnes people would have shunned the Co-op, it would be closed down within a week and the councillors know that. The Co-op do not replace everyday items on their shelves until they have run out and only then do they re-stock.

They often run out of full cream milk etc, it is unbelievable. So we cannot win either way.

So councillors please think before you give an already overloaded town even more to play around with, and give us a decent supermarket with a café where the elderly can sit and have a chat after shopping has finished.

Since the old Runcorn Café closed down, a lot of the elderly have nowhere to go and socialise. This café used to get packed. We were promised a new market and café, and they have insulted us by giving us a ghost town, no market, no café, a street market that only opens in fine weather.

Surely the councillors can see for themselves how unfair it all is. Do most of the councillors come from Widnes and all have cars?

They certainly do not think about people who have to pay for transport and those who are elderly etc.

The teenagers have a bowling alley, play area, ice skating, Jelly Beans, etc, and there are choices of taking a job as well.

Runcorn will be finished unless someone will recognise our plight.

To the original poster - Runcorn has Iceland, Tesco, Asda, Aldi - and will soon get a Lidl, so the only difference in Supermarkets is Morrisons. Where's the problem there? Why are you forced to go to the Co-Op, when there are three other supermarkets in Runcorn? You ask why Runcorn couldn't have a new Tesco, when it has a perfectly good, recently renovated one in Halton Lea. You ask why Runcorn doesn't have a supermarket with a cafe - again, I refer you to Asda... you seem to be complaining about absolutely nothing at all. You were 'promised a new market'... you got one, and noone used it, none of the stall holders were able to make any money, so it closed. Why do you have to get a taxi to go shopping - are you not able to get a bus? We have had branded shopping in Runcorn before, and they don't get the foot fall - take note of the numbers of stores that have opened in Halton Lea and then shut again within the year. Admittedly, Runcorn town centre is in a dire situation - but again, there used to be a perfectly good market in Runcorn, that people stopped using - so it closed. Teenagers and young people throughout the borough have had improved playing facilities in the last two years - the council has spent THOUSANDS doing up parks in both Runcorn and Widnes... Town Hall park, Phoenix Park, Town Park in particular in RUNCORN. Jelly Beans is a play area for young children, NOT teenagers - and Runcorn has one of those too, it's called 'Sue's Mad House'. I think the real issue here, is that you want everything to be in the OLD town centre, and not over at Halton Lea or Trident. Maybe get a bus over to the new town next time, instead of Widnes?

Totally agree TillyMynt, but alas you forget one vital thing........you know everyone wants everything on their own doorstep! heaven forbid people have to organise their transport to get somewhere?

I have never understood this widnes/runcorn divide, its nothing more than a bridge and river! Before i lived in the area i had to get 2 buses to go shopping, it didnt really bother me because i understand that not everything can be within 5 mintues for me and everyone else!

I too agree with your comment about the branded shops, no one used them so their hardly going to hang around!!

As for the purchase from Quality Save, Trident Retail park has a large Home Bargains and if I remember rightly there is also one in Halton Lea, both of these stores sell the same items at the same price as Quality Save as they are all from the same Headquarters in Liverpool. Runcorn has a Poundland, Widnes doesn't. Widnes didn't have a cinema for years, doesn't have a theatre and at the moment doesn't have a 24 supermarket but you still think it unfair for Tesco to come here. As for getting a taxi, I'm sure I saw an article in this paper not so long back about an enterprising gentleman from Runcorn who had brought a bus service where each journey was £1, or something like that so why do you need the expense of a taxi when his bus takes you everywhere for £1 or am I mistaken.
