In reply to the comments from Mike Lucas regarding doorstep donations being 25 per cent down this year (World, July 28) the reason is that a dirty white transit van is going around Widnes stealing the donations from our doorsteps before genuine collectors can get around.
I know this because last week, just before 8am, I left a clothing bag out for one of the children’s charities, some of the clothes were unworn.
I left home at 8.10am and the bag was still outside my front gate I crossed over and turned back to see a man jump out of the passenger side and pick my bag up. I was too far from them to catch the registration number but I am sure my clothes weren’t going to a charity.
I’ve learnt my lesson, I certainly won’t leave clothes on the doorstep again, I’ll contact the charity concerned to make an arranged collection or take them to the shop. Perhaps this information should be passed on to other genuine charities. Name and address supplied Widnes
