WHAT goes around comes around.
In a world of credit uncertainty, crime and dubious morals, may I take this opportunity to relay a happier event.
A couple of weeks ago I went to the cash machine at the Co-op, Windmill Hill, Runcorn.
There was a young lady before me in the queue who, after retrieving her card, proceeded into the shop.
As I approached the ATM out popped £10. Without a second thought I followed her into the Co-op and gave it back to her – my only thought was losing my place in the queue.
Yesterday morning I needed to visit the machine once more.
As usual, mornings are not my best time and it normally takes a couple of cups of tea to make me human, so I was a little groggy.
I followed the usual pr ocedure – PIN number, cash, no receipt – and out popped my card. Into the wallet it went and into the Co-op I went in search of the elusive tea bags.
A young man, of no more than 14, approached me and asked if I had been to the ATM, and after a guarded reply from myself he presented me with my £30.
Taken aback, I thanked him and let him wander off. Very quickly I felt quite ashamed I had not rewarded his honesty, and looked for him when I left the shop, to no avail.
I would like to thank him for his honesty and praise his parents or guardians for raising such a well-behaved person in these troubled times.
