Fairground Rides

By Chris Darlington »

I entered this in the Halton Poet of the year contest Fairground Rides When I see you, I feel I'm on a merry-go-round My heart and head is spinning around.

My insides feel like bumper cars Crashing and bashing together.

When you speak I hear beautiful music My heart pumps like a fairground organ.

The memories of long summer days Are trapped like a prize goldfish in a sixpenny bag I don't go back to those youthful fields anymore Because the grass has grown so long.

All that is found are bits of broken chalk ornaments And missing flights of blunt darts.
