IN 1943 Sergeant J Eustace, who came from Widnes, was in command of a 25-pounder gun/howitzer of 132 (Welsh) Field Regiment Royal Artillery’s 78 Division at a place named Tebourba in Tunisia.

He won the Distinguished Conduct Medal, second only to the Victoria Cross, by destroying seven attacking German tanks single handed – his men had all been killed.

In 1954 Sgt Eustace was the man who trained me, a national service gunner, in the use of that same weapon, including anti-tank work.

He was one of the nicest men I have known, filled with knowledge, humour, humility and kindness.

Under his tutorship the troop won every competition in the regiment.

I believe he became a captain post war in the same Territorial Army regiment, but that is all I know.

I would love to find out what happened to him and to contact his family if possible.

If anyone has any information about Sgt Eustace or could point me in the right direction please call me on 01766 523536.
